Puppy mills are wrong. We agree anyone that breeds females from their first season until they die in the same cage need to be shut down and fined. Stacking dogs is wrong. Putting Dogs on chains is wrong. Shooting old breeding dogs is wrong. Keep dogs on wire is wrong. Not even caring enough to name the dog is wrong. Never touching and grooming the dogs is wrong.Breeding tons of different breeds of dogs is not good because you can't take the time to get to know the breed well enough if you have 10 different breeds and are constantly mixing and producing . Not standing behind your puppies or caring where they go is wrong. With that said , we do believe there is a place for dog breeding.
We breed standard poodles for a living and I am not ashamed to say that! I'm tired of animal right activist saying all dog breeders are bad! Its just not true. I love my dogs. We make it a rule to wait till our girls are 2 to breed them .We don't have hundred of dogs , we have 9 females right now, 4 of which are not old enough to breed yet. Our lines are past though our girls so we know our lines and are very proud of them. Every new male that enters our program is raised to be a perfect gentlemen and when they get to two they are tested . If they dont pass they are not used in our program. They are fixed and placed in a home for free. We feed Iams/Eukanuba large breed puppy food. Its expensive but worth every cent. Our females on average have 3 litters , after that they are fixed and placed in their forever home. Our goal is to have them in their new home at a young age so they have tons of time left to enjoy retirement. They are placed for free. We have a mother right now that is retiring and is going to live with her own son for the rest of her life :) Every puppy or dog that leaves here has the right to come back to here at any point in its life. If their parents can't keep them then we want them back so we can make sure they get a good home. Our dogs run in big fields and play all day. They have central air and heat. Both of which is keep nicer then our own home. I groom our dogs every 6 weeks . Most owners cant say that of their one standard poodle. Every puppy that leaves here is vet checked . Every puppy is born into my hands. I cut the cord, I wipe it off . I put it on its mothers breast. I kiss it's little wet nose for the first time. We are proud of our dogs and puppies. There is a place for Dog breeders in this country.
If you put good breeder out of business all you are going to have left is-
*family bred- a family has a litter in their living room just one time- Does that family pet have any testing done ? Do they know its genetic background? Are they guaranteeing the puppies health? Are either of the parents breedable quality! Do they have the skill to raise the puppy right. Do they know when the puppies learns best, should be paper trained , house trained, placed.... Do they temperment test ?Do they have the knowledge to place the best puppy for a certain family in the right home? * Show breeder- breeding for show- this breeder is breeding for themselves. They are producing a litter for that one special puppy. The rest of the litter is sold. Often late. When the puppies are old enough to tell if they have what it take to show. Puppies need to get in their homes early 8-9 weeks). Not 12-16 weeks . Great , you get a house trained puppy , but you also are buying someone else's dog at that point. What if that breeder has no kids and you do , don't you think that going to affect that puppy ?
*Collector-Starts out with a good heart- They love all their dogs . They have a litter, fall in love .... keeps a couple . Next thing you know they have 8 or 9 dogs in their house. They want to do the right thing by their girl so they fix her and keep her. 5 or 6 years down the road they now have 15,20,30 dogs . Some fixed , some breeding, several boys. There are several packs in the house, groups of dogs that like each other, dogs that don't . Dogs start to fight, dogs start to breed, who's the dad? Carpets are peed on . oop's happen . The house smells. There's to many dogs to give attention. Dogs are fighting over rooms, beds, food. This isnt a good thing for anyone any more. Owners are overwhelmed , dogs are a mess. Puppies are being born on the carpet in the closet. Who's the dad? So they seperate them into different rooms or start keeping them in crates. They aren't pets anymore.... Their retired girl deserved a life and a family all to herself.
* Mass breeder- puppy mill- Breeds every 6 months the same female till she dies- This pretty much speaks for its self , its not the way to go..... It needs to stop.
People need to start speaking up.If you want a nice dog, then you need to start speaking up and stop that 1 % from making all the rules.... If you wait long enough ...... most of us good breeder are going to give up and walk away. No one wants to be treated as a criminal for doing what they love and are good at. For me its producing the perfect family pet... From a child I have wanted to breed dogs , my father bred dogs. Its what I am good at. I am not god , I cant produce the perfect puppy every time, no one can ...but if theres a problem I stand behind my dogs and will do whatever I need to do to make it right. To make you the one special dog that lay in bed at night with you and love's you for life.
